Described as “putting the Malaysian capital on the art map” (Art Newspaper 2016) , Gallery Weekend Kuala Lumpur is built on the enduring success of its launch in 2016. The subsequent 2017 edition surpassed the ambitions and merit of its predecessor, with a dynamic program, including exhibitions, talks and tours, highlighting the best of Malaysian cultural talent. The GWKL 2017 marquee was applauded for “pushing the city to collaborate in unprecedented ways, generating self-awareness amongst various galleries, centres, institutions and arts professionals. Importantly, this provides a starting point from which to discuss how the city’s identity could be mapped in the future.” Ocula.
With over 25 participating commercial galleries, institutions, collections, and special projects–GWKL 2018 will present cultural programming with a quality, eclectic vision of the multi-disciplinary. Large established institutions host museum shows. Commercial and grassroots galleries reveal an exciting contemporary art world, intimately involved with the current political climate, community and urban settings.
GWKL provides a unique encounter with the cultural assets and multi-disciplinary practices of Malaysian, SE Asia and beyond, to local audiences and visitors. Offering a wonderful variety of well-organised programs of viewing, tasting and living Greater KL, GWKL is a cultural destination marquee.
